Consolidation
means moving the train traffic from the BNSF (red) rail corridor
to the UP (green) corridor paralleling Freeway 99(orange). The
BNSF (red) corridor represents a dagger through the heart of
the city primarily endangering heavy residential areas. The
UP (green) corridor is flanked by commercial areas, open space
and limited residential properties. An integral phase of the
consolidation plan includes building over/underpasses across
the consolidated UP (green) track corridor on a number of streets
allowing for easier access for those west of the corridor to
travel east and for those traveling west. The trains will not
have any street level crossings eliminating vehicle/train accident
hazards, relieve congestion, reduce noise and put less pollution
into our already dirty air. The inner-city (red) corridor is
then available for other community uses such as a green belt;
walking, jogging and bike paths; small parks and could be used
for light rail or other possible passenger transportation further
reducing congestion.

The above
map shows a crossing by crossing count of vehicle
traffic over twenty-seven (27) major grade crossings of
the BN&SF Railroad and fourteen (14) UP crossings
in Fresno. The numbers
shown on this map represent a daily average of traffic
in both directions over each of the individual 24
crossings shown. These statistics are a compilation
of the actual data compiled from the 1990-1999 Fresno
Regional Traffic Monitoring Report prepared by The
Council of Fresno county governments, March 2000,
in association with the City of Clovis, the City
of Fresno and the county of Fresno. A complete
copy of these statistics are available by clicking
