'Reduce the danger'

(Published May 17, 2001)

Thank you for the recent article in The Bee, "Slow track of progress," by Russell Clemings. The article pointed out the danger to motorists at the numerous rail crossings in the greater Fresno area.

The article, unfortunately, did not discuss how rail consolidation of the Burlington Northern Santa Fe tracks (a dagger in the heart of Fresno!) along the Santa Fe rail corridor on the west side of Fresno would significantly reduce the danger to motorists at rail crossings. Rail consolidation would result in the building of grade separations (over- and underpasses) to permit cars and pedestrians to not have to stop for trains. Not only would rail consolidation using grade separations improve safety, but it would also reduce traffic congestion and air pollution.
